Rebooting the blag and recent-ish happenings

I used to have a blog at this address, and I even updated it. For a while.

Then I lost interest, and at some point the big G disabled selfhosted blogspot sites.
This, here, shall be an attempt to resume blogging on some scale, about any and all things that pertain to me and my interests.

So, what’s new and what not

Since my last post in 2008 loads has happened. I moved away from Kouvola to Helsinki along with the Uni, moved in with my girlfriend, got engaged, all that. I’ve been mostly unemployed with some bouts of decent translator’s work (though not nearly enough of it). University turned into a stinking pile of waste for me and studying hasn’t been that appealing for a while either. On the plus side, I am engaged to get married, and there may be hope on the horizon of getting my BA degree sometime next year.

More recent activities of mine have included gaming, of the board and video varieties, and also some rocking out.

Gaming activities have included great boardgames such as Red November,  Arkham Horror, Battlestar Galactica, and many other. For reasons unknown (or maybe not), a lot of these games have been Fantasy Flight games. Video gaming has taken a sideroad to consoles, having bought a 360 along with a few games, the likes of Bayonetta and Fable II, both of which I enjoyed a lot, and a helping of music games like GH: Metallica, and a set of Rock Band games (2, Beatles, and now 3). Rocking out has been happening somewhat.

On the subject of rocking out, I went to two gigs recently. One of my long time faves, Dark Tranquillity, were playing in Helsinki and I obviously had to go catch up – the last time I’d seen them on stage was at the 2004 Tuska festival. Having bought their previous live DVD, the set wasn’t that much of a surprise: filled with several songs from their most recent album, the excellent We Are the Void of the past winter, and a fair share of stuff from all around their career. The dark side ended up being invited into the haven of the Nosturi club and oh boy I had a great time. I met with a friend for a beer after the gig and called that an evening well spent.

The other recent gig was that of Finnish melancholy rock outfit Viikate, at the famous Tavastia club downtown. I’ve been seeing a lot of them these past three years and so they weren’t that surprising either, but a good time was had nonetheless, especially at the point when they played Leimu, one of my favorites.

There is an up-coming gig on 3rd December I intend to go see as well: Machinae Supremacy, who released their new album A View from the End of the World about a week ago. It’s been playing almost non stop at every opportunity I’ve had to play it, and I’m looking forward to seeing them on the stage again. There has, however, been something (other than uni) keeping me from blasting One Day in the Universe and Indiscriminate Murder is Counterproductive constantly: Fallout: New Vegas. I may have to write a post of its own for it once I finish the game, because despite what the critics say, it hits closer to home when compared to the old Fallout games, especially the second one.

I shall endeavour to keep posting more regularly now.
